kehinde wiley 'world stage: jamaica' brixton party

Stephen Friedman Gallery put on a special event for artist Kehinde Wiley's 'World Stage: Jamaica' project on Friday 11 October 2013 in Brixton, London to celebrate Wiley's first ever UK solo exhibition. Born in 1977, Wiley has already achieved international recognition for his highly naturalistic paintings of contemporary urban men adopting heroic poses directly referencing classical portraiture. 'The 'World Stage', Wiley's vast and celebrated body of work, has previously focused on Brazil, China, Israel, Nigeria, Senegal and Sri Lanka, with exhibitions held in museums and galleries in Europe and the USA.

The event premiered a documentary film showing the projects progress; the artist was in conversation with Ekow Eshun; and there was be Jamaican food, Wray and Nephew Rum and Red Stripe and music, with Dj-ing from Jerry Dammers of the Specials and others.
