rivane neuenschwander at kochi-muziris biennale 2014, india

12 December 2014
Rivane Neuenschwander will participate at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014 opening this December in the state of Kerala, India. Titled ‘Dead Reckoning : Whorled Explorations', the biennale is conceived as a temporary observation deck hoisted at Kochi. The exhibition draws upon a wide glossary of signs from this legendary maritime gateway to bring together sensory and conceptual propositions that map our world referencing history, geography, cosmology, time, space, dreams and myths.

Rivane Neuenschwander's video installation ‘Contingent' 2008 which recalls the didactic videos screened by natural history museums. Using time-lapse photography, the film deconstructs the formation of the continents by allowing nature's willful course to unfold. A map of the world, rendered in honey, is gradually consumed by an army of tiny ants. Landmasses shrink to islands, isolated from their previously contiguous bodies. The whole is reduced to parts, and the system of the seven continents is reformed into a strange new alignment.

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is an initiative of the Kochi-Biennale Foundation. It has been curated by Jitish Kallat.

The biennale runs from 12 December 2014 until 29 March 2015.
