yinka shonibare MBE in the house of the flying wheel at backlit gallery, nottingham

23 May 2014
Gallery artist Yinka Shonibare MBE is included in this group exhibition at Backlit Gallery in Nottingham, UK. The House of the Flying Wheel will also feature work by Julian Wild, Darren Banks, Mark Davey and Tracey McMaster.

Backlit is an independent art gallery and studios established in 2008 with the aim of providing affordable studio space for contemporary artists at different points in their careers. The venue supports programmed exhibitions, artist commissions and events with open workshops, screenings, talks, and open studios for diverse audiences. Backlit also delivers unique critical sessions with regional and national universities, artists and the public for works in progress.

The House of the Flying Wheel will feature Shonibare's first film ‘Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball)' 2004. It draws on Versi's opera of the same title which is concerned with the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden in 1792. Employing the medium of dance, the film explores a number of conceptual and choreographical ambiguities, not least the indeterminacies of identity and gender implicit in the use of costumes and masks.

The exhibition runs from 23 May until 17 August 2014.
