yinka shonibare MBE ‘wind sculpture’ in ‘public’ at art basel miami beach

4 December 2014
Yinka Shonibare MBE's 'Wind Sculpture' will be on display in the Public sector at Art Basel Miami Beach. The Public sector offers visitors a chance to see outdoor sculptures, interventions, and performances, sited within an open and public exhibition format at Collins Park. The sector has been produced in collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art since 2011.

At six metres high Shonibare's Wind Sculptures have a majestic presence, with brightly coloured, painted surfaces to replicate the patterns of Dutch wax fabrics. As Coline Milliard has written for ARTINFO, these works are ‘among Shonibare's most resolutely abstract pieces so far, the Wind Sculptures proudly announce that his enduring love affair with batik has just taken yet another new turn.'

Their apparent fluidity belies their construction in fibreglass. These incredible sculptures mark a new departure for Shonibare and continue his interest in extending his practice out of traditional gallery spaces and into the open air within the public realm. Shonibare's Wind Sculptures have been exhibited at MCA Chicago, Illinois, USA (2014); Gerisch Foundation, Neumünster, Germany (2014); Howick Place, London, England (permanent); Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, UK (2013); National Maritime Museum, London, England (2013).

‘Wind Sculpture' will be installed at Public sector, Art Basel Miami Beach from 4 - 7 December 2014.
