Paul McDevitt’s subversive works explore motifs and iconography from twentieth century paintings, sculptures and works on paper.

Paul McDevitt was born in 1972 in Troon, Scotland. He lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

McDevitt works across various media including painting, drawing, sculpture and video. He reworks art historical tropes in pointedly ‘low' media such as ink drawing, graffiti, cartoon and collage to subvert the practice of painting. Elements of Modernism, De Stijl, and Surrealism appear alongside popular motifs repurposed from cartoon characters and beer mats. McDevitt describes his practice as “a type of 21st century pop art– one where there’s nothing in the windows and the shops are all closed.”

There is a fantasy element to McDevitt’s oeuvre that suggests worlds and processes devoid from reality. However, his bold and dynamic works often highlight issues relating to contemporary society. Situating this commentary within fantastical panoramas produces disquieting, compelling and intensely powerful works.
