Jennifer Rubell is an American conceptual artist whose practice centres on the viewer’s physical interaction with the object.

Jennifer Rubell was born in 1970 in New York City, USA. She currently lives and works in New York City.

Rubell creates hybrid, participatory artworks in a variety of media including sculpture, painting, video and performance. Her works are often provocative and violate the traditional boundaries of art institutions by openly inviting viewers to touch, engage with and even eat the works. In 2014 Rubell was a ‘Women in the Arts’ honoree at Brooklyn Museum, New York.

When in proximity with her works viewers are encouraged to engage senses normally absent from museum and gallery contexts. Rubell’s happenings prompt immediate and powerful responses from her audience. In the aftermath they invite reflection. Her object-based works are produced concurrently to the happenings and are intrinsically connected, capturing the energy and oddness of her performances.
