Denzil Forrester in discussion at Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham, UK

To coincide with Denzil Forrester's solo exhibition Itchin & Scratchin, Nottingham Contemporary hosts an evening of film and discussion exploring the British-Grenadian artist's practice. The evening launches with 'Denzil's Dance', a film directed by Julian Henriques that follows Forrester's 2019 residency in Jamaica sketching Kingston's open-air nightclubs. The evening concludes with an 'in conversation' between Forrester and the gallery's Director, Sam Thorne tracing the artist's life and 40 year long career. 

Denzil Forrester, 'Itchin & Scratchin' opens at Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham, UK

Nottingham Contemporary presents a selection of paintings and works on paper by Denzil Forrester in his largest institutional exhibition to date. Titled Itchin & Scratchin, the show spans Forrester's engagement with the dimly lit dancehalls of 1980s East London to the present-day open-air clubs of Jamaica. The exhibition travels to Spike Island, Bristol in July 2020.

Art on the Underground have commissioned Grenada-born, British artist Denzil Forrester to create a large-scale public artwork, currently on view until September 2020. Forrester is the third commission in a new series at Brixton, following on from Njideka Akunyili Crosby in 2018 and Aliza Nisenbaum in 2019. The programme selects artists to respond to the diverse narratives of the murals from the 1980s, the rapid development of the area and the wider social and political history of mural making.
