Gordon Parks (1912-2006) was an American photographer, musician, writer and pioneering film director who played a significant role in American documentary photojournalism from 1940 to 1970. Parks was the first African American to produce and direct major motion pictures, creating films that focussed on slavery and the struggles of African Americans in mid-century America. Parks is best known for his photographic work documenting issues of poverty and civil rights, including photoessays for Life magazine and a significant body of work with the FSA (Farm Security Administration) 1941-1946.
