Kendell Geers in Group Exhibition at La Maison Rouge, Paris, France

In June 2011, La maison rouge in Paris launched a series of exhibitions focusing on the art scenes of cities perceived to be "peripheral" on the map of the art world. The first city was Winnipeg. Now the exhibition series continues with the focus this time on Johannesburg, South Africa.

The idea is to depict a particular city through the works and perspective of the artists associated with it. After the mid career overview at Haus der Kunst in Munich earlier this year, gallery artist Kendell Geers will be one of a group of notable artists featured at 'my joburg'.

Also known as Joburg or Jozi, Johannesburg is a megapolis with a population of more than 6 million. A productive artistic community has developed there, with a number of photographers as well as painters, sculptors, performing artists and video-artists. This exhibition looks at the art scene in a city where history has been on the march since the abolition of apartheid and the first democratic elections in 1994. The artists selected portray the city as a cosmopolitan metropolis, a place conducive to encounters and a source of poetry and imagination.

The exhibition runs from 20 June until 22 September 2013.
