Rivane Neuenschwander in 'Art and Alphabet' at Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany

Art and Alphabet explores the relationship between writing and images in contemporary art. The basic components of writing - letters, symbols and alphabets - are analysed, manipulated and modified in the works of 20 international artists, including Rivane Neuenschwander's film ‘Erotisme', 2014. The work is based on the Surrealists' erotic hand signalling chart, a risqué adaptation of the standard American Sign Language manual alphabet.

The exhibition brings together works from the last 10 years, including pieces that have been made specially for the exhibition. A number of individual works from the 1960s and 1970s provide a historical perspective.
