Rivane Neuenschwander Presents 'The Order and The Method' for 'Post' at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, Denmark

For 'POST', gallery artist Rivane Neuenschwander presents the work 'The Order and the Method', which is based on a sequence from Jean Luc Godard´s feature film The Carabineers from 1963. The film tells the story of two poor men called to serve in battle, lured by promises of the world's riches. Their wives encourage them to fight when they hear about the riches. The men leave and cross the battlefields and villages, destroying and pillaging as they go. The pair's exploits are recounted through postcards sent to their wives, telling tales of the horrors of battle. While they return home with a suitcase full of postcards of the splendorous of the world that they have fought for.

'The Order and the Method' is based on a specific sequence of the film, in which postcards are grouped in different categories (monuments, the middle age, transport, animals, industry, etc) and showed one by one in one long sequence shot. The postcards exhibited here were bought on the internet. The images correspond with the list of pictures shown or mentioned in the film. The order of the presentation follow the consecutive order in which the postcards arrived in the mail, and not the sequence they appear in the film. The reverse of each card contains the exact layout and notes from the original postcards, and also the script extracted from the film. These passages from the film refer to the messages sent to the wives.

'POST' is an exhibition series for which the invited artists send the works and materials by regular mail. The staff at Kunsthal Charlottenborg is responsible for installing the exhibition following the artist's enclosed instructions. The exhibition series started 1 February 2013. POST is curated by Jacob Fabricius, director of Kunsthal Charlottenborg.

'The Order and the Method' is on show from 2 to 30 November 2013.
