Stephan Balkenhol in 'Truth' at Segundo Museum of Art, California, USA

12 May 2013
Stephan Balkenhol features in the group exhibition 'Truth' at El Segundo Museum on Art in California.

Truth and authenticity belong to the core values of every western society. It is a precious treasure, but truth seems to be hard to find these days. Where do you get it? Where do you see it ? Do you want to see it in your-self? Are you afraid of seeing your counterfeit in the mirror? Is it easier to see it in other people? Do you recognize the beauty? Does beauty lie in the eyes of the beholder? Do lies have short legs? With "Nuda veritas" or naked truth Gustav Klimt was able to shock his contemporaries, in ESMoA's new experience everybody can decide for himself, how close nakedness gets to the truth over the last centuries.

Chaotic ingredients: Starting with "Expulsion from paradise" - where according to biblical tradition mankind was first hit by the awareness of their nakedness - beautifully painted by an unknown Westphalian Master to "das Glück liegt hinter der Hecke (luck lies behind the hedge)" by finish contemporary artist Robert Lucander ESMoA's new endeavor spreads over nearly 500 years with its divers combination of classic, modern and contemporary artworks. Pieces made of oil, acrylic, water-colour, porcelain, wood, paper, metal and canvas by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Ghada Amer, Stefan Balkenhol, Albrecht Dürer, Thomas Eller, George Grosz, Horst Janssen, Fernand Khnopff, Martin Kippenberger, Gustav Klimt, Robert Lucander, Robert Mapplethorpe, Eadweard Muybridge, Alphonse Mucha, Philipp Pearlstein, Max Pechstein, Lo Chan Peng, Pablo Picasso, Deborah Poynton, Christian Schöler, Caroline Smeet, Franz von Stuck, Jasper van der Laanen un-folds its beauty in an experimental setting of red vinyl and lace curtains.

The exhibition runs from 12 May to 25 August 2013.
