Stephan Balkenhol monument to German Composer, Richard Wagner, is Unveiled

22 May 2013
Gallery artist Stephan Balkenhol has completed a monument to German composer Richard Wagner. The slightly larger than life-size bronze model is installed in Leipzig, central Germany, the birthplace of Wagner.

The Wagner monument was unveiled to the public on Wednesday 22 May to celebrate the German composer's 200th birthday. It shows a young Wagner overshadowed by his older, famous self. Some of Wagner's works were performed later in the day in Bayreuth, where the composer's descendants organize an annual music festival.

Stephan Balkenhol was influenced by designs made by sculptor and painter Max Klinger for a 4 metre tall monument in 1913. Balkenhol is quoted as saying 'it is an unusual thing to finish something someone else started'.
