Yinka Shonibare MBE in Group Exhibition at Arts University, Bournemouth, UK

Continuing on from POTENTIAL ARCHITECTURE, TheGallery programme at University of Arts Bournemouth explores the wide-ranging practice of our Honorary Fellow Lucy Orta with Block Party: Contemporary Craft Inspired by the Art of the Tailor.

Internationally renowned her for her unique visual practice fusing fashion, art and architecture, the Crafts Council invited artist and curator Lucy Orta to select works which engage with pattern-cutting on a variety of levels. Orta included Yinka Shonibare MBE in her selection, an artist known for his use of textiles - both as something visually appealing but equally in the historical messages that are apparent in different textiles and fabrics.

The process of transforming the flat pattern block into three-dimensional form is an enduring source of inspiration. The rich cultural heritage and evocative language of pattern cutting has stimulated a broad range of contemporary applications. Designed by architecture studio Carmody Groarke the exhibition reveals the contemporary practices and creative possibilities of the centuries-long skill of tailoring by presenting and pushing pattern cutting beyond the fashion garment.

The exhibition focuses on three themes: Storytelling, Embracing the Future and Motif and Manipulation and showcases new work by 16 established and emerging international and UK artists and makers that have embraced the interdisciplinary nature of this skill, applying the aesthetics and techniques of pattern-cutting to their practice in innovative and unexpected ways.

The exhibition features the artists: Tia-Calli Borlase, Rohan Chhabra, Philip Delamore, Shelley Fox, Charlotte Hodes, Suzanne Lee, Claudia Losi, Hormazd Narielwalla, Lucy Orta, Raw-Edges, Dai Rees, Rubedo, Yinka Shonibare, Rhian Solomon, Richard Sweeney, and Simon Thorogood.

The exhibition runs from 5 December 2013 - 24 January 2014.
