Yinka Shonibare: Safiotra [Hybridities/Hybridities]
Overview
British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare’s first major solo exhibition on the African continent Safiotra [Hybridités/Hybridities] at Foundation H, Madagascar, features artwork spanning 20 years of Shonibare’s career, including The African Library (2018), part of Fondation H’s permanent collection.
The exhibition also includes works from the Hybrid Mask and Hybrid Sculpture series, three works from the Decolonised Structures series previously exhibited at the artists’ solo exhibition at Serpentine South (2024) and earlier works such as Alien Man on Flying Machine (2011) and Alien Woman on Flying Machine (2011).
Shonibare has selected a series of works from the foundation’s collection to accompany the show, featuring works by 20 artists, including Abdoulaye Konaté, Amina Agueznay, El Anatsui, Elias Sime, Ibrahim Mahama, Jems Koko Bi, Kelani Abass, Leilah Babirye, Madame Zo, Malika Agueznay, Ouattara Watts, Safaa Erruas, Virginia Chihota, Yaw Owusu and Zanele Muholi. The curated dialogue explores the construction of African history post-independence.
An exhibition catalogue accompanies Safiotra [Hybridités/Hybridities], published in June 2025 by Fondation H. The trilingual catalog (French/Malagasy/English) includes exhibition views, artwork photographs, and five commissioned essays, including contributions from Gus Casely-Hayford (Director of V&A East, London) and Professor Tiana Razafindratsimba Dominique (expert in language science and interculturality, University of Antananarivo).
