Yinka Shonibare features in 'World of Pattern'
World of Pattern investigates how, in art from various periods and cultures, watercolour has often played a central role in the development of ideas involving patterns. The medium allows for immediacy and flexibility during the creative process. The exhibition presents both classical and contemporary patterns to highlight their aesthetic significance in the emergence of abstract art. It also explores the influence of watercolour techniques on design and the decorative arts in Europe.
Masterpieces by renowned artists and craftspeople are included in the presentation. The most notable among them are William Morris, Josef Hoffmann, Sonia Delaunay, Arne Jacobsen, Sölvi Sólon Íslandus Helgason, as well as Josef and Anni Albers.
The exhibition also includes works by contemporary artists whose visual language is rooted in traditional as well as new ideas about patterns and abstraction. Among others, works by Yinka Shonibare, Jacob Hashimoto, Shahzia Sikander, and Henrik Vibskov will be part of the exhibition.
