Leilah Babirye features in Amsterdam Sculpture Biennale ARTZUID Edition IX
Leilah Babirye features in the ninth edition of Amsterdam Sculpture Biennale ARTZUID, curated by art historian Ralph Keuning.
Titled Enlightenment the show celebrates the 750th anniversary of the city of Amsterdam. Set along Apollolaan, Minervalaan and Zuidas in Amsterdam-South, the exhibition presents 60 sculptures and installations by over 70 internationally acclaimed artists.
Babirye’s selected work, Inhebantu from the Kuchu Eastern Busoga Kingdom, comprises a pair of sculpted figures that are fused together at the back of the head. “With ceramics you're adding and you keep adding until the clay tells you to stop,” the artist says.
Inhebantu gets its name from the title of the queen consort of the Busoga Kingdom, with a meaning akin to ‘mother of Busoga.’ Her work is a form of activism, as she confronts Ugandan audiences with sculptures of queer individuals who share the same given names, clan identities, or kingdoms as themselves.
