‘End of Empire', a major retrospective of Yinka Shonibare CBE

Museum of Salzburg, Salzburg, Austria

The British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE (1962 London, UK) makes work that scrutinizes the legacy of Western colonialism and its lingering traces. His theatrical and subversive installations featuring headless figures in historical costumes made of colorful batik fabrics are often based on episodes from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which he transforms into tragicomic tableaux vivants. Held on occasion of the centennial of the Salzburg Festival, the retrospective presents around sixty works from the past three decades.
