Thomas Hirschhorn participates in MAXXI: A Story for the future' in celebration of the Roman museum's first decade Curated by Hou Hanru with curatorial and research MAXXI team


In celebration of its tenth anniversary, MAXXI, Rome hosts a programme of events, including 'A story for the future', a ten-hour social digital marathon. The event is a partnership with Vanity Fair Italia and takes place on the museum's social media channels on Thursday 18 June (11am–9pm). The event features major Italian and international institutions, artists, architects, designers, critics, curators, scientists who discuss the social function and digital potential of museums around the world following the pandemic.

The event is divided into two thematic sections, 'MAXXI in the world, or are global museums still needed?' and 'Towards a new ecosystem of creation'. The former reflects on how Covid-19 has affected the function, organization, perception of museums whilst the second examines how museums might become laboratories for experimentation, involving ever-wider communities in sharing new ideas. 

The event is introduced and moderated by Giovanna Melandri (President of the MAXXI Foundation); Hou Hanru Artistic (Director, MAXXI); Bartolomeo Pietromarchi (Director, MAXXI Arte); Margherita Guccione (Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity, MiBACT); and Pippo Ciorra (Senior Curator, MAXXI Architettura). Amongst the guests are Dario Franceschini (Minister of Culture) and Roberto Fico (President of the Chamber), who open the Festival.

The live dialogues and the recorded contributions alternate with videos telling the most significant exhibitions, performances and moments of the first ten years of the MAXXI. Among the participants are: virologist Ilaria Capua; architects including David Adjaye, Petra Blaisse, Rem Koolhaas, Renzo Piano, Carlo Ratti, Hashim Sarkis, Patrick Schumacher, Cino Zucchi, Sara Marini; artists including Thomas Hirschhorn, Piero Gilardi, Miltos Manetas, Diego Marcon, Margherita Moscardini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Tomás Saraceno, Marinella Senatore, Nico Vascellari; designers including Formafantasma and Daniel Perlin; and media partners Malcom Pagani (Vice Director, Vanity Fair), Roberto Pisoni (Director, Sky Arte), Massimiliano Tonelli (Director, Artribune).
