7 February 2020 - 5 March 2020Stephen Friedman Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new and historic works by Melvin Edwards, a pioneer in the history of contemporary African-American art. Spanning five decades of Edwards' career, this is the artist's second show at the gallery and follows his recent solo exhibitions at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland (2019-2020) and MASP, São Paulo (2019). His work was also recently included in the touring exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, initiated by Tate, London, and currently on view at de Young Museum, San Francisco. Edwards' exhibition at the gallery is accompanied by a booklet with a newly commissioned essay by Eric Booker, Assistant Curator at The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York.
Kendell Geers, 'Love, By Any Means Necessary'

Stephen Friedman Gallery is pleased to present Love, By Any Means Necessary, a solo exhibition of new works by South African artist and curator Kendell Geers who lives and works in Brussels. This follows his recent solo show at Rua Red, Dublin and the exhibition ‘Incarnations: African Art as Philosophy' that he curated at Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR), Brussels in 2019. The exhibition is accompanied by a booklet and a commissioned essay by Yala Kisukidi, Philosopher and Curator of Yango II Biennale, Kinshasa 2020.
